About AWEBO

What is the AWEBO bird?

The AWEBO bird is the male willow ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus), a small grouse that lives across the Norwegian fells, the Arctic tundra and the subarctic birch forests. The name AWEBO is an onomatopoeic spelling of the male's spring call.

Why is it called AWEBO?

In spring, the male willow ptarmigan gives a loud, croaking advertisement call that people in northern Norway have heard as something close to a-WE-bo, a-WE-bo. AWEBO is that call written down.

Is the AWEBO bird a seagull?

No. The AWEBO bird is a willow ptarmigan, a ground-dwelling mountain grouse, not a seagull.

Where is AWEBO made?

The handmade AWEBO birds are felted, stitched and finished by hand in Norway. The brand is operated from Narvik in Northern Norway.

Handmade birds

Is AWEBO a children's toy?

No. AWEBO is a decorative handmade object, not a toy. It may contain small parts and should be kept away from young children and pets.

What is the difference between the AWEBO and AWEBO on Rock?

The AWEBO is a small wool ptarmigan carry-charm with a clip loop. AWEBO on Rock is a wool ptarmigan set on Norwegian mountain stone. Both are made by hand in Norway.

What is the AWEBO made of?

The AWEBO is made from felted wool, antique brass and birch bark. It is about 9 cm tall and weighs about 40 g with its clasp.

Are two AWEBO birds ever exactly alike?

No. Every bird is completed by hand, so its form, markings, posture and expression vary slightly. Small handmade differences are part of each piece's character.

Can I choose my AWEBO bird's number?

Yes. The number is held the moment you reserve it and inked on the underside of the stone (AWEBO on Rock) or the brass tag (AWEBO). Each number is sold once and never again.

How do I care for my AWEBO?

AWEBO: spot-clean only, keep dry and handle gently. AWEBO on Rock: dust gently and keep dry.

Yes, for the handmade birds. Add a short gift note right after you pay, and we put it in the box. Wall art and totes ship straight from the production site without a note.
